Commitment: Our Dream Our Journey Our Hope
The theme of this mural encompasses the journey that Woodland Community College (WCC) students experience. The foundation of the mural, like the campus itself, is depicted through the use of blooming roses, palm trees, and the vast landscape surrounding Woodland. Fundamental to the mural is the use of books throughout, symbolizing academics and emphasizing the importance of education on this journey; the student community fulfilling their hopes and dreams relies on the support and resources they receive while at WCC. An eagle, WCC’s mascot, is shown at the beginning of the mural as overseeing the journey of the students at the college. In the end the hopes and dreams of the faculty, students, and community are for each individual to find their path and like the eagle emerge in full flight, wings spanned.
Left Side Wall (Dreams)
Underneath the eagle is the hand of a student holding a compass. In place of the cardinal points there are icons representative of the larger community of Woodland and at WCC. In the place of the North symbol, there is a graduation cap; symbolizing the most immediate goal of students. To the East are pictured three silhouettes illustrating the family bond and community, which are essential to the wellbeing of the students at WCC. Moving South, there is a globe depicting inclusivity, awareness and the endless opportunities outside and within WCC. For the West is the All Seeing Eye symbolizing knowledge and foresight. Beneath the eagle’s wing a mother and child prepare for a school day with backpack and books in hand. The mother is a role model and represents parents that are juggling school while raising a family. Next to them a group of gathering figures show the different occupations that students pursue both during their time at WCC and after. The first male figure represents a farm worker who labors hard in the fields by day and attends school by night. The nurse and accountant are also prominent avenues that students pursue. The students and their occupations illustrate the multiple dimensions of identity formation that occurs with both work and school.
Central Wall (Journey)
Transitioning to the middle of the wall there are two central figures kneeling that are bound by thorns. The figures are entwined to form a bridge that connects the students at WCC to their hopes and dreams on their journey. The union of the figures forming this bridge represents strength and foundation for future students, as well as support and guidance provided for current students at WCC. The figure on the left represents Apollo the Greek god of music and poetry. The three shadowed hands are pulling students back into the darkness and inhibiting them from pursuing their goals. The shadow hands also represent students freeing themselves of the pressures they experience as students on their journey towards achieving their goals. The figures that are breaking through the wall are students emerging from the bleak landscape that holds them back from obtaining their education.
Right Side Wall (Hope)
Moving to the right side are student figures walking along the bridge and heading towards the Woodland Community College campus. The right side represents the WCC atmosphere and depicts what the students hope to gain while at the college. The focal point is the platform of expression which is for students to come together for poetry readings, music, art, sports, and varying forms of community building. Illustrated on the stage is a soccer player symbolic of a current motivation to organize an athletic club on campus. The musician and artist are representative of the desire for creative outlets on campus. The student reading on the far right side of the stage faces the direction of the library. The library is an essential resource for students at WCC. On their journey the students and faculty hope to develop an abundant library that will continue to expand in the years to come.
We journey together as our community blossoms
